Humans aren’t the only creatures that dislike being confined. Throughout history, animals have escaped from zoos, farms, laboratories, aquariums, and even military facilities, sometimes using remarkable intelligence, persistence, and brute force to get away. Here are some famous examples.

1. The Octopus That Escaped From an Aquarium

In 2016, an octopus named Inky became famous after escaping from the National Aquarium of New Zealand.

Inky reportedly discovered that a small gap at the top of his enclosure could provide a route to freedom. He squeezed through the opening, crawled across the floor, and eventually made his way into a drainage pipe leading directly to the ocean.

The escape was particularly impressive because octopuses are incredibly flexible. Since they have no bones except for their beak, they can squeeze through surprisingly small spaces.

2. The Gorilla That Climbed Out of Its Enclosure

In 1985, a gorilla named Koko made headlines for escaping from her enclosure at the Gorilla Foundation in California.

Koko was famous around the world because she had been taught to communicate using sign language. But her intelligence wasn’t limited to communication.

On one occasion, she managed to escape her enclosure after apparently manipulating the locks. Her handlers eventually managed to coax her back inside using food.

3. The Elephant That Walked Out of the Circus

Elephants have repeatedly demonstrated that they can remember routes, recognize people, and solve problems. Some have also demonstrated a remarkable determination to escape captivity.

One famous example involved an elephant named Chipper, who escaped from a circus in Florida in 2010.

The elephant wandered through the streets after leaving the circus grounds. Authorities eventually captured him and returned him to his handlers.

4. The Penguin That Went on Holiday

Not every animal escape is motivated by a desire to disappear forever.

In 2012, a Humboldt penguin named Pierre escaped from Tokyo Sea Life Park in Japan. Pierre reportedly found a way out of his enclosure and ended up swimming in Tokyo Bay.

For several weeks, the penguin successfully avoided capture while apparently enjoying his unexpected holiday.

He was eventually spotted and captured after spending roughly three months outside the aquarium. The escape was remarkable because Pierre survived in the wild despite having lived in captivity.

5. The Sheep That Escaped and Hid for Years

One of the strangest escape stories involved a sheep named Shrek in New Zealand.

Shrek escaped from his farm in 1998 and avoided capture for approximately six years. When he was finally found in 2004, he had grown an enormous fleece because nobody had been around to shear him. His wool reportedly weighed nearly 60 pounds.

Shrek became a celebrity after his discovery, appearing on television and even meeting the Prime Minister of New Zealand. Eventually, his enormous fleece was removed, giving him a much lighter appearance.

6. The Cows That Escaped a Slaughterhouse

In 2002, a group of cows escaped from a slaughterhouse in Poland and managed to evade capture.

One cow became particularly famous after escaping repeatedly. According to reports, the animal broke through a fence and fled toward a nearby lake. The cow eventually reached an island, where it remained for several weeks.

The animal reportedly became so difficult to capture that the farmer eventually decided to let it remain on the island.

7. The Chimpanzee Who Used a Branch as a Ladder

Chimpanzees are among our closest living relatives, so perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising that they can be remarkably clever escape artists.

Zoos have recorded numerous chimpanzee escapes, with some animals using branches, ropes, or other objects to climb over barriers.

In one famous incident, a chimpanzee escaped its enclosure and managed to reach areas normally inaccessible to visitors. The animal was eventually returned safely.

8. The Crocodile That Escaped During a Hurricane

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated parts of the United States, destroying buildings and flooding huge areas.

The storm also provided an opportunity for numerous captive animals to escape. Among them were crocodiles and other reptiles from facilities that were damaged by the flooding. Some animals were swept away by floodwaters and ended up far from their enclosures.

9. The Monkey That Escaped Through a Sewer

Monkeys are notorious for finding weaknesses in enclosures.

In one memorable case, a monkey escaped from a zoo by climbing through a drainage system. Instead of simply jumping over a wall, it exploited infrastructure that had not been designed with an escape artist in mind.

10. The Tiger That Escaped Into a City

Big cats have occasionally escaped from zoos and private facilities, creating dangerous situations for both the animals and humans.

One of the most famous incidents occurred in 2011 when a tiger escaped from a private exotic-animal facility in Zanesville, Ohio.

The owner released numerous exotic animals before dying, leaving dozens of animals—including tigers, lions, bears, and wolves—outside their enclosures.

Authorities were forced to intervene because the animals posed a serious threat to the public.
