13. Kids Jump
Kids jump from a second story window onto mattresses in Newcastle. (1979). Glenn Murtha and his brother jump from an abandoned house’s second-storey window. The boy with the ventriloquist’s dummy is another brother and the picture was taken by sister Tish Murtha (More pics and info in the link). Their father had his own scrap business, so they didn’t just use the houses for fun but would scavenge items to sell in the scrap yard or use the timber to make fires.
14. John Paul II
Pope Saint John Paul II meets with Mehmet Agca, the man who attempted to assassinate him. (Dec 27, 1983). Agca shot John Paul II two years prior to this photo, but fortunately the Pope survived. He met with Agca, who was still in prison, to forgive him in person and to talk. Agca was deeply sorry and visited the late Pope’s grave in 2010, putting flowers on it. He was apart of a Turkish mafia group that was operating in Bulgaria. He had at least one accomplice who ran away and didn’t fire any shots or detonate a bomb he brought (happened in St. Peter’s Square). Also, the assassination was rumored to be masterminded by the KGB who were pissed off that the Pope was supporting labor movements in Poland (this is featured in a Tom Clancy novel ‘Red Rabbit’). He was released from prison in Italy in 2000 and deported to Turkey where they put him in prison for some robberies and a previous assassination he committed. He ended up being paroled on January 12, 2006, re-jailed on January 20th 2006 (because the court said they made a mistake).

20. U.S. Air Force
The various types of aircraft operational in the U.S. Air Force fly in a single formation over the Gulf Coast, Florida in 1956. Visible are, top row from left, B-36 bomber, B-47 bomber, KC-97 tanker, RC-121 observation, B-57, B-66; Second row from left, B-52 bombers, C-131, C-119, C-124 transports; third row from left , F-86D, F-84G, RF-84F, F-102A fighters, bottom row from left, F-94C, F-89H, QF-80A target towing, T-33 jet trainer, F-84F, F-86H, and F-100A. What’s really crazy is that the B-52 is still in use and not slated for retirement anytime soon. Its service life has been extended to at least 2040 and it might go longer than that.
21. Confrontation
Manual laborers confront a military policeman at a gold mine in Brazil by Sebastião Salgado. (1986). In January 1979 Farmer Genésio Ferreira da Silva hired a geologist to investigate whether gold he found on his property was part of a larger deposit. A local child swimming on the banks of a local river found a 6 grams (0.21 oz) nugget of gold. Soon word leaked out that indeed da Silva was sitting upon one of the largest deposits in the world. By the end of the week a gold rush had started with thousands of people descending on the farm to mine. Five weeks later, there were 10 000 on Ferreira’s property and another 12 000 nearby. Huge nuggets were quickly discovered, the biggest weighing nearly 6.8 kilograms (15 lb), $108,000 at the 1980 market price. Early in the history of the mine, the Brazilian military took over operations to prevent exploitation of the workers and conflict between miners and owners. Because of the chaotic nature of the operation estimating the number of miners was difficult, but at least 100,000 people were thought to be present, making it one of the largest mines in the world.

23. Dream Team
FIBA allowed professional basketball players to compete in the Olympics for the first time at the 1992 Games. The best players in the NBA teamed up to represent the USA, winning the gold medal with arguably the best team ever assembled aka Dream Team. The thing is, that pic is missing some notable members of the squad. The full roster:
Laettner, Christian (only college player)
Robinson, David
Ewing, Patrick
Bird, Larry
Pippen, Scottie
Jordan, Michael
Drexler, Clyde
Malone, Karl
Stockton, John
Mullin, Chris

Johnson, Magic
They absolutely crushed every team in their path.

25. Underwater Pic
One of the world’s first underwater photographs by Louis Boutan. (1893). The craziest thing about underwater photos during this era was generating enough light for the camera to register the image. They would use a couple of small barges filled with flash powder and synchronized with the camera.
