    Sean, when spelled correctly, has a fada over the “a”. In the Irish language a fada signifies an elongation of a vowel sound, in this case the “a”. Therefore rather than pronouncing the “an” in Sean as “ann” it is pronounced as “awn” much like the Anglicised version “Shawn”.
