The Southern United states did not exclusively use Broad Gauge (roughly 5 feet.) While many southern railroads were broad gauged, many more were narrow gauged, (around 3.5 feet) while still others were standard gauged at 4 feet 8.5 inches. The railroads were not required to change to “standard” gauge after the Civil War, and many broad and narrow gauged railroads continued into the 1900’s. In fact, the wikipedia link used notes that this gauge change was only on one railroad. That railroad being “Southern”. Southern Railroad was one of MANY railroads, and was not the only one there. The story tells how over a 36 hour period, the railroad converted from Broad to Standard. It does not however note that every single railroad in the south converted.
