Aaaand we are back. So here are this week’s life pro tips.
01. When wiring up a bathroom…
Install dimmable lights and light switches. They are much easier on the eyes for those middle of the night events, and can double as a night light when you have guests. In many cases, it’s as easy as replacing the light switch. They also make both dimmable florescent and led bulbs these days.
There are even LED lights with a “sunset” effect when dimmed, i.e. the light goes from normal white to a more orange light when turned down so it doesn’t mess with your melatonin levels.
02. When overloaded at work…
Ask your boss to help you prioritize your tasks, even if you already know what the priorities are. In this case, “overloaded” is synonymous with “deadlines will be missed”. “Overloaded” does not mean “I’m extra stressed this week”.
Create a list of all your major tasks and prioritize them. Then go to your manager and ask them to verify the priorities as you have outlined without saying that you are overloaded.
This lets them see on paper that you have a lot on your plate. This also lets them know you are thinking ahead and that you are practicing prioritization skills. This also lets them take some responsibility for when you miss a deadline on a task because you BOTH agreed it was a lower priority. In doing this, you avoid the questions and criticism for missing a deadline. Plus, your manager now serves as a first line defense. They will be ready to defend you because they know why you missed a deadline and they were part of the process that led to that happening.
03. Always be prepared to leave a job…
Because your employer is always prepared to leave you. Do it to advance your career and shield yourself from layoffs.
· Keep your resume always up to date.
· Periodically ask people if they will be your reference.
· Go on interviews, even if you don’t want the job so you can practice this skill.
· Have money saved for in between jobs.
04. Pet Poison Hotline
You can save money and potential worry after your dog eats something it isn’t supposed to by calling the Pet Poison Hotline – 855-764-7661.
05. When working in retail…
Replace “sorry for the wait/trouble” with “thank you for your patience”. Of course it’s not going to work 100% of the time. Some people are just irrational and impatient. But I’d say a good 90% of the time it works.
Glad you’re back!
