There is evidence of rapid expansion in the cryptocurrency landscape as Bitcoin leads the way into the mainstream. Apart from the leading crypto coin Bitcoin, more people are becoming familiar with names such as Litecoin, Ethereum, and more. Investors and potential crypto traders have their noses to the grindstone garnering experience in cryptocurrency trading. With that said, it is worth mentioning that the crytocurrency and blockchain landscape is relatively new in the financial world and there is a whole lot more to learn about the digital asset and its decentralized ledger. Here are five surprising facts about crypto.

What is Cryptocurrency

Cryptocurrencies are digital assets operating independently as an exchange medium without relying on any central authority. Its existence revolves around decentralized networks and encryption which it leverages to execute transactions as well as record and verify them.

Digital currencies are gradually penetrating all the sectors in the world including the online gaming landscape. Today, the gambling scene is suffused with different types of cryptocurrency casinos offering gamers a novel betting experience. Instead of making deposits with fiat, bettors who prefer to wager at crypto casinos can make payments with any digital asset of their choice. Thanks to cryptocurrency, the gaming world now has attractive features like blockchain-based gaming, no KYC accounts, Instant payment, seamless withdrawal, and more.

The First Known Commercial Bitcoin Transaction Had Something To Do With Pizza

The world witnessed its first commercial crypto transaction on the 22nd of May 2010 when Florida-based Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10k BTC to order a couple of Papa John’s pizzas which were delivered to him. Reportedly, Laszlo Hanyecz who happens to be a Hungarian native had BTC to spare, and leveraging the bitcointalk forums, he located a UK-based user to make a $25 order for him, and in exchange, the user received 10,000 Bitcoins from Laszlo.

Then, the worth of 10K Bitcoin was pegged at $40 which put the worth of one BTC at less than half a cent, thus, the transaction was considered to be quite over-the-top and with the boost in the current Bitcoin price, it appears to be even crazier. One fascinating fact is that any trader with the same amount of Bitcoin during the price hike of September 2022 would be considered a BTC millionaire as the value of 10k Bitcoin was pegged at a jaw-dropping $190 million.

Bitcoin which was founded by the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto has since gained tremendous prominence in the financial world and in no distant time, it may wade into mainstream finance.

The World Had Little Experience of Cryptocurrency Before the Advent of Bitcoin

Before Satoshi Nakamoto founded BTC, there was already life in cryptocurrency. In 1983, an American IT guru called David Chaum took the credit for creating the notion of a peer-to-peer virtual currency that couldn’t be tracked. Before the year wrapped up, Chaum took to a scientific journal where he published his personal viewpoint about cryptographic digital currency.

His firm known as Digicash came into existence towards the end of 1989. According to Chaum, he launched Digicash with the hope that it would gain acceptance from enough people whom he expected to give him maximum support, he commenced selling the new payment method to business people.

Distinct from the current cryptocurrencies, Chuam’s theory was that users would access currency from their bank which would function as a central entity. The only information that the bank would have would be on the acquisition of funds but nothing on how the funds were expended. The reason for creating the coin was to ensure the safety of online transactions and this became feasible due to blind signatures ensuring that transactions remained anonymous.

In the long run, Digicash hit some stumbling blocks and with the advent of 1996, it filed for bankruptcy. Around the same time, the globe witnessed the launch of other digital assets including Ecash, b-money, and e-gold and the trio performed better compared to their predecessor.

Before long, there was a boom in e-commerce, catalyzing the growth of digital cash alongside the then payment methods, giving it much popularity despite the failure of Chaum’s Digicash. This is proof that digital assets existed long before Nakamoto’s BTC and the Bitcoin founder paid homage by referencing a few past projects in his BTC whitepaper.

The Number of Existing Cryptocurrencies Is Above 20,000

Currently, the number of cryptocurrencies in existence is above 20,000, however, a larger portion is considered insignificant, some are discounted and there are many that are already inactive. By 2023, over 9k cryptocurrencies were active but the number was around 12k earlier in 2022. The reason for the existence of multiple tokens and coins is because creating a new digital asset is quite easy but no matter how many cryptos come into existence in this modern finance era, 87% of the market cap is controlled by the top 20.

Cryptocurrencies Are Considered Illegal in Some Countries

The use of cryptocurrencies is not allowed in every country and a good instance is Turkey. Crypto exchange is banned in countries like Nigeria, however, China’s ban on digital assets is the most significant. In China, traditional financial institutions are not to provide cryptocurrency transaction-related services in 2021

With that said, it is worth mentioning that the actual banning of digital assets is practically impossible because of its decentralized ledger backing. The only thing that countries can afford to do is shut down exchanges and regulate access to crypto service providers

Bitcoin’s Total Amount is Limited

One interesting fact about Bitcoin is that during the set-up of the protocol for its network, the limit/ cap was set at just 21 million coins. This means that at a certain point, cryptocurrency miners will no longer be able to create new Bitcoins.

Helping to consummate transactions on the BTC blockchain is described as bitcoin mining by leveraging computing power via a process called proof of work. People who mine Bitcoin may receive rewards which can come in the form of BTC itself.

At every 210,000 blocks, the reward is expected to halve; this can happen at four-year intervals. The total number of BTC in circulation as of September 2022 was 19.15 million, leaving just very little yet to be mined.

In Summary

Many of these digital asset facts are not known to millions of people but the onus is on users, traders, investors, and people into crypto-related businesses to arm themselves with enough information about digital assets.
