Here is this week’s YSK segment.
01. Ibuprofen is highly toxic to dogs
If you own dogs and drop an Advil/Motrin/Midol, you better find it because Ibuprofen is highly toxic to dogs. Ibuprofen overdose can cause GI, renal, and central nervous system (CNS) effects. It can increase a dog’s risk of developing acute renal failure. Treatment for acute ibuprofen toxicosis includes inducing emesis, administering activated charcoal, and inducing diuresis with intravenous fluids at twice the maintenance rate while monitoring renal function. With timely and appropriate treatment, most dogs are expected to have a positive outcome.
02. If your house was built prior to the 1950s…
If your house was built prior to the 1950s, the wiring and anything that required fireproofing (stoves, etc.) may contain asbestos. Here is what to do if you suspect asbestos. Friable asbestos was not banned until the late 1970s and technically it is still legal to use asbestos containing products for some applications, provided it is not friable. Friable just means it can be broken apart using only hand pressure. Another thing to consider, if products were imported from countries with lackluster environmental regulations, they may contain asbestos even if the manufacturer says they don’t.
03. You do not have to wait 24 hours to file a missing persons report
Contrary to what many TV shows state, you do not have to wait 24 hours to file a missing persons report. If you have reason to believe someone you know is legitimately missing you have every right to phone your police department for help. You do not have to wait 24 hours before making the call.
04. Before donating to a charity…
Charitywatch.org is a great website to research what charities are the right charities you should be donating to.
05. It is very important to finish a course of antibiotics
It’s very important to finish a course of antibiotics, even if you feel better. If you only finish say 80%, you won’t have killed off the hardcore last 20%, which drives resistance and it is a bad thing. Also, do not use antibiotics unless you absolutely have to. Broad spectrum antibiotics will wipe out your good intestinal flora and cause all sorts of problems from diarrhea to nutrient absorption problems. The remaining bacteria in your gut are resistant, can pass their plasmids to pathogenic bacteria. You’re basically creating your own resistant bacteria breeding ground.
