    When the US Mint started making dollar coins, you could purchase them online or at a federal reserve, with an exchange of 1 for 1. So some enterprising traders I worked with scoured credit card offers to find the one with the best offer on ‘miles’ and would apply for the card. Once they were approved, they would max out the card each month buying dollar coins that they would immediately deposit into their banking account and pay off the balance each month. They would rack up thousands of ‘miles’ and use them for vacation flights every year until the US mint caught on to the practice and started charging an exchange fee….
