    I don’t understand the claim that every observable galaxy is accelerating away from us with a speed proportional to its distance, and yet some galaxies are colliding? Isn’t this contradictory?

      Picture it this way. Two planets are orbiting a star and they collide creating some amazing fire works. Now what most people people dont realize is that the star in orbiting the center of the galaxy, so therefore, the two planets that collided are still moving in the same direction that the star is moving on its orbital plane.
      If you think about how things move in space, they typically dont move in one exact direction, they tend to move in a circle around the object, either stuck because of their orbits, or are slowly moving into the object while also going around it.
