A side that completed a historic treble in the 2022/23 campaign, Manchester City have emerged as one of the best club teams on the planet.

With a rich history that dates back all the way to 1880, here are some interesting facts about a club with over 140 years of stories.

City Looking To Break New Ground

After winning the Premier League last season, City this year are looking to become the first club to ever win the English top-flight title for four consecutive years. The Cityzens, who are 7/4 in betting on Champions League to also retain their European title this term, managed to overcome a resilient Arsenal side to claim the English crown last term. Arsenal, who are 5/1 in Champions League tips to lift the trophy, will be hoping they can deny City that fourth consecutive English crown. In the history of English football, five clubs have won three titles in a row. Huddersfield Town, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City can all boast of achieving the feat but the Sky Blues this season have a chance to break new ground.

City’s recent success just shows how far the club have come since their humble beginnings when founded back in 1880 as St. Mark’s. The team went on to be called Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887, before eventually settling on Manchester City seven years later in 1894. That was the same year as the club adopted their sky blue home colours and they have not deviated since. It was back in 1892 that the club joined the Football League and 16 years later they secured their first major piece of silverware. Beating a strong Bolton Wanderers side 1-0 at Crystal Palace in London, secretary Tom Maley was the first City boss to lift the FA Cup in 1901. Welsh football and skipper Billy Meredith was the hero on the day with the only goal in the 23rd minute. A momentous occasion for a club in its infancy.

City Now A Super Power

City have had their ups and down since but that FA Cup victory was the platform for a club on the rise. Having been relegated to the third tier of English football for the first time in their history in 1998, Manchester City’s journey to their current status as one of the best teams on the planet has not been an easy one.

Everything changed in 2008 with the takeover by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan through the Abu Dhabi United Group in August 2008. The investment from the group helped City reach new heights and compete with the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea

and Liverpool for silverware. Winning a first Premier League title in the 2011/12 season saw City truly announce their arrival in the domestic game and they have gone on to win six league titles since. The arrival of manager Pep Guardiola took City to a new level again and their treble-winning season last term was the high point in the club’s rich history.

From starting as St Mark’s to being crowned champions of Europe, City have come a long way. A club with a remarkable story, and all eyes will be on where this club can go from here.
