17 is the number that comes after 16 and before 18. It is one of the most talked about digits, especially in the political realm, and has often been associated with some superstitious beliefs. While it is the seventh prime number and represents the youth, 17 doesn’t hold much significance for most people unless it’s their birthday. That doesn’t mean it is any less significant than the other digits. If anything, 17 has some interesting facts, as you will see below.

1. Some Italians Believe 17 is an Unlucky Number

While people in most parts of the world consider 13 unlucky, some Italians think 17 is the unluckiest number. During the Roman Empire, 17 was written as XVII, an anagram of VIXI, which translates to “I have lived.” The Roman number was mostly inscribed on tombstones to show that the deceased had served their time on earth. From then, Italians started considering 17 an unlucky number as it signified the end of life.

2. 17 is the Least Random Number

In a study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), respondents were asked to choose a number from 1 to 20. 17 was the least randomly picked figure.

3. 17 is the Police Number in France

In most parts of the world, if you want to call the police, you can do so by dialing 911 or 999. However, in France, 17 is the official Police helpline number. 18 is for the fire department, and 36 or 24 can be used to summon the SOS doctors.

4. The Youngest Grandmother was 17 Years Old

The title of the youngest grandmother goes to Mum-zi, a 17-year-old (at the time) woman from the city of Calabar in Nigeria. Apparently, she conceived and bore her first baby when she was only 8 years and four months old. Her daughter then gave birth when she was 8 years and eight months old, making her the youngest grandmother.

5. Queen Anne of Britain was Pregnant 17 Times

Considered one of the unluckiest Queens of England, Anne was pregnant 17 times. Out of all these pregnancies, she gave birth to only five children. The rest ended up as miscarriages or stillbirths. Out of the 5 liveborn children, only one managed to pass the age of 2.

6. Eva Braun Met Adolf Hitler When She was 17 Years Old

Eva Braun, who later became Adolf Hitler’s wife, met him when she was just 17 years old. The two met in 1929 at Heinrich Hoffmann’s shop (Hitler’s official photographer), where she was an employee. Hoffman introduced them, and 7 years later, Eva moved to Hitler’s chalet, where they married afterward.

7. The Youngest Nobel Prize Winner was 17 Years Old Malala Yousafzai

Malala Yousafzai is the youngest Nobel Prize winner; she won it when she was only 17 years old. She won the 2014 edition, thanks for her efforts in advocating for girls’ education not just in her home country, Pakistan, but all over the world. Lawrence Bragg, an Australian-British physicist, was the second youngest person to win a Nobel Prize. He won the prize for physics in 1915 when he was 25 years old.

8. Alzheimer’s Symptoms Can Kick in at the Age of 17

While most people assume Alzheimer’s only affects adults in their 50s and 60s, a man in China started showing signs of the disease when he was only 17 years old. Unfortunately, by the time the young adult was 19, doctors fully diagnosed him with the condition, making him the youngest Alzheimer’s patient.

9. Soulja Boy Released “Crank That” When He was 17

“Crank That” is a song by American rapper DeAndre Cortez Way, popularly known as Soulja Boy. When the song was released in 2007, it immediately became a world hit. It catapulted the singer’s status, and most rap lovers had him in conversations of one of the greatest to ever do it. Most people do not know, however, that the rapper was only 17 years old when he released the song.

If you are a fan of European football/soccer and the game at large, you must have noticed several big-name players wear/wore the number 17 jersey. Popular examples include Kevin De Bruyne, Sadio Mane, Raheem Sterling, and Lucas Vazquez.

11. Harambee, the Gorilla, was Shot When He Was 17 Years Old

In 2016, there was a popular video doing rounds on social media about a baby that fell into a gorilla enclosure. The gorilla being talked about was Harambe, who was only 17 years old. The zookeepers shot him because they thought he would harm baby Isaiah Dickerson, who was only three years old. Harambe had celebrated his birthday the previous day before he was shot.

12. Kiera Knightly was only 17 Years When She Appeared on the Pirates of the Caribbean

Kieara Knightly, who plays Elizabeth Swann in The Pirate of the Caribbean, was only 17 years old when she appeared in her first film. It was later revealed that Kiera had to go through years of therapy to heal from the trauma she had gone through when playing the Elizabeth role.

13. A 17-Year-Old Boy Blew Up Starbucks Trying to Copy Tyler Durden from “Fight Club”

There is no doubt that the film Fight Club influenced many of us. But in 2009, a 17-year-old boy called Kyle Shaw blew up the windows of a Starbucks coffee shop in an attempt to copy Tyler Durden’s actions. He was arrested and charged with arson and weapon possession.
