All factors kept constant, the purpose of a flag is to unite a particular group of people. It promotes patriotism, and that’s why every country or region has its flag. However, the social symbols can sometimes evoke negative emotions, especially from the demographic they don’t represent. Those on the opposite side of the flag’s ideology may denounce or attack what it means. Throughout history, there have been several flags whose movements have sparked much controversy. This piece highlights the popular ones.
1. The Confederate Flag
Initially, the Confederate flag was used by General Robert Lee’s Army in Northern Virginia. However, it was later adopted by the Confederate States of America as a symbol of Southern Pride. The controversy around it started during the era when the United States of America was facing extreme racism. This flag was used mainly by white supremacists and groups such as the Ku Klux Klan that racially segregated African Americans. It’s so controversial that big box retailers like Walmart, eBay, and Sears banned its sale on their platforms.
2. The Pride Flag
Designed by Gilbert Baker in San Fransisco in 1978, the Pride or Rainbow flag has been popularized worldwide. It is a symbol of gay pride and is mainly used during LGBT marches. The flag has undergone many changes over the years, but its meaning has always remained the same – to represent hope for a community that has been marginalized for a long time.
The controversy around the Pride Flag started when people or businesses displaying it became targets of violence. Several businesses displaying the Pride Flag have been set on fire, and some customers stopped buying from them. Also, several people have been murdered or assaulted for flying the Rainbow Flag.
3. The Blue Lives Matter Flag
When a college student, Andrew Jacob, created the Blue Lives Matter flag in 2014, he didn’t know it would spark so much controversy. The flag was aimed at symbolizing police solidarity; Jacob was empathetic about how the police were being treated.
However, after it went viral, many people concluded that the flag separated officers from citizens. It was as if the Blue Lives Matter flag was creating an us versus them mindset. At the same time, many perceived it as an act of defiance of the Black Lives Matter movement. When the Blue Lives Matter flag was flown during the white supremacy riots in Virginia in 2017, it fueled more controversy. There have been numerous attempts to ban this flag.
4. The European Union Flag
The European Union is an organization that brings together 27 countries within the continent. It aims to improve politics, unity, and the region’s economy. The blue flag with 12 stars is highly controversial because its members aren’t as united as the organization claims. Since the organization’s formation, numerous countries have threatened to exit. Also, on several occasions, some countries within Europe have refused to fly the flag during special events.
5. The Iraqi Flag
Controversy around the flag of Iraq stemmed mainly from the attempts to change its design. Initially, the flag of Iraq had three colors: black, white, and red. It also had three green stars at the center. After Sadam Hussein became president, he added the phrase “Allahu Akbar” in Arabic. When he was removed from power, the country had to design a new flag, and that’s when things got out of hand.
A year after Sadam’s removal from office, Rifat Chadirji developed a new design with yellow and blue stripes and a blue crescent. The Iraqi people didn’t like this flag, and it faced a lot of criticism before it was removed. Iraq had to use a temporary flag for four years before the current one was introduced in 2008.
6. The Patriote Flag
In Canada, specifically Quebec, separatism has been a constant key issue whereby people of Lower Canada believe they should have their own country. The Patriote Flag was used in the early 1800s by the francophone Canadians who resided in Quebec when fighting for their self-government.
Even though they were unsuccessful, the Patriote Flag was adopted by separatists. The flag became more popular and controversial in 1995 when Quebec held a referendum to separate itself from Canada. Ever since, the flag has been synonymous with many protests in Quebec.
7. The Japan Flag
While the majority of Japanese are very comfortable with their flag, the same can’t be said for their neighbors. The rising sun, the theme of the older Japanese flag, was flown in Korea when Japan colonized that country for 35 years.
It was also flown in China during the Nanjing massacre, where thousands died. To evade the association of the Japanese flag with war crimes, the country removed the rays and was only left with the sun. Countries like South Korea have openly shown their dissatisfaction with the Japanese flag.
8. The United States Flag
Just like the Japanese flag, the American flag is a symbol of pride in the United States. It has 13 stripes, representing all 13 colonies that fought against the British, and 50 stars, symbolizing all the states.
However, the American flag is associated with economic dominance and unwanted military presence worldwide. For instance, In the Middle East, the locals do not like the American flag. Online, there are videos of the American flag being burnt as an indication of resistance.
9. California’s State Flag
The story of California’s state flag, which portrays a bear and a star, is quite controversial. It was the flag of drunks, thieves, and murderers who were rebelling against the government that had welcomed them. These rebels invaded Sonoma, took over from the Mexicans, and created the Republic of California. The bear on the flag was aimed at scaring the Mexican forces. On the contrary, some believe that the portrayal of the bear promotes awareness of the environmental protection of wildlife.
