No aspect of the human experience is as important as love. It has deep roots in every culture and is a part of our biology and psychology. It influences our behavior in many ways and shapes societies.

We all know that, from an evolutionary perspective, attraction is essential, as it leads to people selecting mates with whom they think they can produce quality offspring. However, love plays an equally vital survival role, as it bonds humans long-term, aiding them in raising children more cohesively. Nature has ensured that our species does this through biology, as our bodies release hormones such as dopamine and oxytocin to reinforce social connections.

Given that families are the building blocks of all societies, attraction, and love contribute to more stable population dynamics. Here, we rattle off some not-so-common factors that impact why people become enthralled by others and smitten with them.

Unique Genetic Traits

Many biologists like to say that evolution does not work on optimal pairing, as it does not seek to create perfect organisms. Instead, it works on matching specimens that can survive in a given environment. So, it produces good enough traits. Thus, we often search for traits in others that will facilitate good enough reproduction, and we do this subconsciously. That has been rooted in our evolutionary history as a species, and it is not something that many can neglect, as we are drawn to certain physical traits that signal fertility.

For example, a study from the University of Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute, published in the journal Genome Biology, analyzed genetic data from over 13,000 heterosexual couples and concluded that genetic factors that determine one’s height also influence preference for a partner’s height. Therefore, by analyzing the genetic information linked with people’s height, Roslin researchers, with an accuracy of 13%, could predict the height of a person’s partner.

Aside from height, scent is allegedly also a focus of subconscious mate selection. Pheromones, chemical signals carried through body odor, convey information about a person’s genetic makeup. Interestingly, research suggests some individuals are subconsciously attracted to the scent of individuals with MHC genes that are different from their own. MHC, or Major Histocompatibility Complex genes, are a group connected to our body’s ability to spot and fight pathogens, and studies show that many are inherently attracted to people with MHC genes different from their own, which scientists believe is a mechanism that seeks to promote offspring genetic diversity.

Place of Residence

In this modern digital age, people can interact with someone for an extended period but have yet to meet up face-to-face with that person. Science suggests that physical closeness boosts the likelihood of attraction, which is called the mere-exposure effect. Moreover, in rural areas, due to the lack of options and exposure to potential romantic partners, people are more likely to fall in love with a new person, as they are also falling in love with the idea of sharing a future with someone, not just their distinct attributes.

Per this study from Legal US Poker Sites on the best US states for finding love, some regions of America are more advantageous for long-term relationships than others. Like in poker, in love, timing and risk assessment are everything, as is correctly reading signals. According to this investigation, the luckiest state for love in the United States is Massachusetts, which has the longest median marriage duration, over twenty years, and a divorce rate of just 1%.

That is probably the case due to social, cultural, economic, and demographic elements. A pivotal one is the state’s robust social services, along with high household incomes and strong cultural traditions. The latter is cultivated by many residents actively participating in local organizations, such as various religious groups and social clubs, which provide networks for pairings and build a strong sense of community.

The Weather

Sunshine and other pleasant weather conditions improve mood, which leads to increased social interactions, which in turn boosts the number of romantic situations—according to University of Southern Brittany professor Nicolas Guéguen, who experimented on date solicitation during sunny and cloudy days, discovered that women react more favorably to courtship solicitation on sunny days than on cloudy ones, with his conclusion being that this is on account of the sun’s positive mood induction.

Regarding weather, it is also interesting to note something called cuffing season. That is a phenomenon where individuals are more likely to seek serious relationships during colder months. That gets driven by dampened romantic prospects during fall and winter, periods with lowered social interaction, making people more inclined to form committed relationships. That holds even in the face of insights from the British Psychological Society that note warm environments are more conducive to social/romantic interactions. Still, the anxiety that diminished general levels of opportunities for romance bring makes people dive into serious relationships far more quickly.
