The story of how the Guinness World Records started is quite interesting. If you haven’t heard it yet, here is a quick recap: In the early 1950s, Sir Hugh Beaver, the managing director of the Guinness Brewery at the time, had attended a shooting party. While going about their activities, an argument ensued among the attendees on what the fastest game bird in Europe is. Incidentally, they did not get an answer from themselves or any reference book. That is how the Guinness World Records started.

Most of the Guinness World Records records are realistic, straightforward, and stand a chance of being broken. Examples include a soccer/football player with the most career goals, the fastest aircraft, and the most expensive car. However, others are outright bizarre. We look at some of them below:

1. Most Armpits and Feet Sniffed

While working for Hill Top Research Laboratories in Ohio, Madeline Albrecht had to smell people’s armpits and feet. She did this for 15 years, and by the end of her career, Madeline had smelled around 5,600 feet, setting a Guinness World Record.

2. Farthest Distance To Squirt Milk from the Eye

On September 1, 2004, Ilker Yilmaz from Turkey set a Guinness World Record for squirting milk from his eyes to the longest distance. To begin with, squirting milk from the eyes is strange; sending the liquid to 9 feet and 2 inches (279.5 centimeters) is bizarre.

3. World’s Stretchiest Skin

Garry Turner, a UK resident, set the record for having the world’s stretchiest skin. Unfortunately, he suffers from a rare disease called Enlers-Danlos syndrome, which causes the skin to disconnect from internal organs, ligaments, and tissues.

In extreme cases, the disease can make the patient’s blood vessels collapse. Garry first broke this record in 1998 when he stretched his stomach skin by 6 inches. In 1999, he broke the same record by stretching his skin by 6.25 inches. He first discovered the condition when he was eight years old. Today, Garry Turner is a sideshow performer and appeared in the short film “He Took His Skin Off For Me.”

4. Farthest Eyeball Pop

A Brazilian man known as Sidney de Carvalho Mesquita holds the record for the farthest eyeball pop – he can pop his eyeballs by 0.71 inches. According to several interviews, Sidney, also known as Tio Chico among his peers, said he discovered the talent when he was 9. Before he became a global sensation, Sidney used the trick to scare/entertain his friends. The record was officially certified on January 10, 2022.

5. Heaviest Train Pulled by a Beard

Spain’s Ismael Rivas Falcon once pulled a train weighing 2,753.1 kilograms for 10 meters using only his beard. The feat also became a Guinness World Record that is yet to be broken since it was set on November 15, 2001. Ismael set the record at the El Show de los Records in Madrid, Spain.

6. Most Dice Stack on a Cat’s Paw

8. Largest Nose (Male)

Though deceased, Mehmet Ozyurek held the record for having the world’s largest nose. Interestingly, he broke the record thrice: first in 2001, then in 2010, and finally in 2021, before he died in 2023. Mehmet’s nose measured 8.8cm from the tip to the bridge. He died due to a heart attack and was buried in Artvin, Turkey.

9. Largest Mouth

Samantha Ramsdell is a content creator famous on social media app TikTok. One of the factors that made her popular among her followers is that she has the largest mouth. Measuring 10.33 cm (4.07 in) wide and a gape of 6.52 cm (2.56 in), Ramsdell’s mouth is extraordinarily large. The record was confirmed by Dr Elke Cheung, a dentist practicing in Connecticut. Guinness World Record judge Spencer Cammarano was also present.

10. The Largest Hairy Family

The Gomez Family, located in Mexico, holds the Guinness World Record for the largest hairy family. Members of this family suffer from congenital generalized hypertrichosis, which causes their bodies to be covered in 98% of hair. Five generations of the family suffer from the condition; the record was awarded in 2000.

11. Most Pubs Visited

13. Shortest Living Woman

According to the Guinness World Records, an Indian actress known as Jyoti Kishanji Amge is the shortest living woman. Born on December 16, 1993, Amge has a height of 62.8 centimeters (2 ft ¾ in). Medical experts attribute her restricted height to a genetic disorder known as primordial dwarfism. Amge officially claimed the record on December 18, 2011, two days after her birthday. A Turkish farmer known as Sultan Kosen holds the record for being the tallest living man. He measures 251 centimeters (8 ft. 2.82 in).

14. Longest Lasting Kiss

A Thai couple, Laksana and Ekkachai Tiranarat, broke the record for the longest-lasting kiss on February 12, 2013 – they kissed for 58 hours and 35 minutes straight. The pair broke the record on a famous TV show known as Ripley’s Believe It or Not. Although the Guinness World Records briefly recognized the achievement, it was later scrapped as it contradicted some of its recently updated policies.

15. Fastest Speed for a Motorcycle While Blindfolded

In 2003, Billy Baxter, a biker from the United Kingdom, rode a motorcycle while blindfolded and reached a record-breaking speed of 265.33 km/h. He was riding a Kawasaki Ninja.
