1. Charlie Sheen

Carlos Irwin Estevez, known professionally as Charlie Sheen, is an actor best known for his role in Two and a Half Men Sitcom. Besides that, he is a source of inspiration to many people struggling with sobriety, as his journey was mindblowing.

Charlie Sheen’s situation was so dire that he had to take six years away from the limelight to focus on leading an alcohol-free life. Interestingly, the actor’s turning point was when he took his daughter late to an appointment one day.

2. Tom Holland

Tom Holland, or Spiderman as most people know him, struggled with alcoholism while he was preparing and filming the The Crowded Room TV show. The renowned actor was tasked with playing a mentally ill character, which, despite having the help of psychiatrists and therapists, took a toll on him.

For a while, Tom Holland sought solace in alcohol to regain his identity. However, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly on May 9, 2023, the actor acknowledged that he had beaten the addiction and had been sober for more than a year.

3. Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato is a famous singer and songwriter known for her hit single “Heart Attack.” Besides that, she was also heavily dependent on cocaine and heroin. In 2018, she almost died due to a drug overdose following a relapse in her rehabilitation.

Consequently, this life-altering event prompted Demi Lovato to turn her life around and stop taking alcohol and drugs. She took some time away from the limelight, and when she came back, she was 100% sober. She did not take a pint of alcohol while releasing her eighth album, further proving that she was on course to complete sobriety.

During her healing journey, Demi changed her pronouns to they/them. They have been very open about their sobriety and have spoken about it in numerous interviews, including one they had with Jimmy Fallon in 2022.

4. Zac Efron

Zac Efron’s success in the High School Musical franchise came at a huge cost. To handle the overnight fame, Zac started abusing alcohol and cocaine. In 2013, he hit the headlines when he sought rehabilitation services. Thankfully, he found help and attained full sobriety.

5. Ben Affleck

Like Charlie Sheen, Ben Affleck’s struggle with sobriety has been an uphill battle – his journey started in 1997. He relapsed a few years after that, forcing him to go to rehab three times. It was not until 2018 that Affleck finally got over the addiction, and he has retained a positive attitude to his struggles with sobriety ever since. The actor’s turning point was when, at one point, he felt he was blundering too much when drunk.

6. Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel Radcliffe started abusing alcohol towards the end of the Harry Potter films. In an interview with BBC Radio, the actor admitted that he was panicking and didn’t know what to do after the show. However, the good news is that Daniel Radcliffe stopped drinking in 2010 after participating in the play “Equus” and has been sober for more than a decade. Daniel Radcliffe says he owes his sobriety to the immense support he got from friends and family.

7. Adele

Adele described herself as being a borderline alcoholic during her 20s. She even opened up to missing alcohol so much while performing at the Colosseum in 2023. In an interview with Oprah, Adele realized she had a drinking problem after her divorce from Simon Konecki. Besides the breakup, the iconic singer also admitted that her addiction kept her dad away from her. She even has a song called “I Drink Wine”.

8. Drew Barrymore

After divorcing Will Kopelman, Drew Barrymore found herself drinking way more than usual. It was so severe that it necessitated the intervention of her friends like Cameron Diaz. The breakup itself was caused by Drew’s drinking habits. Eventually, Drew stopped drinking, and in December 2021, she admitted to being two years sober.

9. Lucy Hale

Unlike most celebrities, Lucy Hale’s struggles with sobriety have been very private. While being interviewed by The Diary of a CEO in 2023, Lucy admitted that she started drinking when she was 14. Her journey towards sobriety began when she was 20; she was 33 at the time of the interview.

According to Lucy Hale, her drunk self felt like her real version. As such, she would binge drink and pass out with no recollection of what had happened. The actress and singer stopped drinking in January 2022 after one of her friends passed away due to alcoholism.

10. Bradley Cooper

Bradley Cooper’s alcoholism was so bad that it affected every aspect of his life, including relationships and work. Everyone around him kept their distance and did not want to associate with him. But in the footsteps of all the celebrities on this list, the iconic actor and filmmaker sought help and has been sober for more than a decade.

11. Robin Williams

Addiction isn’t easy to beat, as Robin Williams can attest. The actor and comedian started doing cocaine and drinking alcohol in the early years of his career. He then stopped taking drugs after the death of his friend John Belushi in 1982. However, he relapsed frequently and used to talk about it in his stand-up routines. Unfortunately, Robin passed away in 2014, a few days after checking into rehab.

12. Robert Downey Jr

Iron Man, as most people know him, Robert Downey Jr, abused alcohol, heroin, and cocaine. In 1996, he was arrested for drug possession. However, he quit all these drugs and used therapy, yoga, and meditation to stay sober. It’s been over two decades, and by the look of things, the remedies described have worked wonders for Robert Downey Jr.

13. Stephen King

Renowned novelist Stephen King struggled with alcohol addiction for many years. His journey to sobriety started in 1987 after joining Alcoholics Anonymous, a global peer-led mutual aid fellowship committed to helping people abstain from alcoholism. Throughout his life, Stephen King has never kept secret his battles with addiction, and neither is he ashamed of it.
