With movies such as Superman, Superman II, Man of Steel, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice generating billions of dollars at the box office, Superman has become one of the most recognizable fictional characters in history.

However, behind the success of the Man of Steel is a strange collection of tragedies involving actors, creators, and other people associated with the character. Some have suffered terrible accidents, while others experienced financial struggles, mental health problems, and mysterious deaths. This has led to the belief that Superman is cursed. But is there really a Superman curse, or are these unfortunate events simply coincidences? Let’s find out!

What Is the Superman Curse?

The “Superman curse” is the belief that people who play Superman or become closely associated with the character experience unusual misfortune. The theory became especially popular because several people connected to Superman experienced serious problems.

The most famous examples include George Reeves, who played Superman on television, and Christopher Reeve, who portrayed him in the famous 1978 movie and its sequels. Superman’s creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, are also sometimes included because they experienced financial and legal troubles after creating one of the most valuable fictional characters in history.

However, the idea of a curse is not something supported by scientific evidence. It is largely a piece of Hollywood folklore created by connecting several tragic stories together.

The Mysterious Death of George Reeves

George Reeves became famous for playing Superman in the television series Adventures of Superman, which ran during the 1950s. However, his life came to a tragic end in 1959 when he was found dead from a gunshot wound in his bedroom.

His death was officially ruled a suicide, but questions surrounding the circumstances have continued for decades. Reeves was reportedly preparing to marry his fiancée, and some people found it difficult to believe that he would have taken his own life.

Because of the mystery surrounding his death, theories about murder and accidental death have circulated over the years. His death became one of the biggest pieces of evidence used by people who believe in the Superman curse.

Christopher Reeve’s Terrible Accident

Christopher Reeve is probably the person most responsible for the Superman curse becoming famous. He played Superman in four movies beginning with Superman: The Movie in 1978 and became one of the most recognizable actors associated with the character.

In 1995, several years after his final Superman movie, Reeve was participating in an equestrian competition when his horse suddenly stopped at an obstacle. Reeve was thrown forward and landed on his head, fracturing his vertebrae and severely damaging his spinal cord.

The accident left him paralyzed from the neck down. He required a wheelchair and a ventilator for the rest of his life. Reeve later became a major advocate for spinal cord research and disability rights before dying in 2004.

What Happened to Superman’s Creators?

The curse story goes even further back than the actors. Superman was created by teenagers Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, who sold the character to Detective Comics in 1938 for $130.

Superman eventually became one of the most valuable fictional characters ever created, but his creators did not initially receive anything close to the fortune that their creation generated.

Siegel and Shuster spent decades fighting for better compensation and recognition. Their financial difficulties became particularly painful because Superman had become a global phenomenon while the men who created him struggled financially.

Eventually, the two received a settlement and were given a creator credit on Superman projects. Their story is often presented as the first chapter of the supposed Superman curse.

The Story of Margot Kidder

Margot Kidder played Lois Lane opposite Christopher Reeve in the original Superman movies. She was enormously successful during the early part of her career, but she later experienced severe mental health problems.

In 1996, Kidder disappeared for several days after experiencing a manic episode. She was eventually found living in a cardboard box and had suffered injuries after an attack.

Rather than hiding what happened, Kidder later became an outspoken advocate for mental health awareness. Her struggles are sometimes included among the tragedies associated with the Superman curse, although there is no evidence that her mental health problems were caused by playing Lois Lane.

Why Do People Believe in the Superman Curse?

The Superman curse is an excellent example of how humans find patterns in unrelated events. When one person associated with Superman experiences a tragedy, it may simply be an unfortunate event. When several people connected to the character experience tragedies, however, people naturally begin looking for a connection.

Superman is also an unusually famous character. Almost every major actor associated with the franchise has been followed by millions of people, meaning their personal struggles receive far more attention than those of ordinary people.

The dramatic contrast also makes the stories memorable. Christopher Reeve played a character who could not be injured by almost anything, only to become paralyzed in a real-life accident. George Reeves played an invincible superhero before dying from a gunshot wound. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created one of the world’s most valuable characters yet struggled financially.

These stories are tragic and certainly strange, but they do not prove a curse.

So, Is the Superman Curse Real?

There is no credible evidence that Superman is cursed. The unfortunate events involving George Reeves, Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster, and others are real, but there is no established connection between those events and the fictional character.

The Superman curse is therefore better understood as a fascinating Hollywood legend. Superman has been around since 1938 and has been connected to thousands of people. Inevitably, some of them were going to experience terrible things.

Perhaps the most ironic part is that Superman himself was created to represent hope, courage, and the ability to overcome impossible challenges. In the real world, Christopher Reeve eventually embodied those qualities himself, turning a devastating accident into a lifelong campaign for people with disabilities and spinal cord research.

There may not be a Superman curse, but the strange and sometimes heartbreaking history surrounding the Man of Steel is certainly real.
