More than 50 years later, people still doubt the story of Apollo 11 and its astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. The majority of the doubters claim that the moon landing was staged. However, how accurate are these allegations?

The Flying of the American Flag

One of the most controversial moon landing theories is the flying of the American flag. In the image, Buzz Aldrin salutes the American flag, which seems to be waving in the wind. But wait a minute; there is no wind in space. How did the flag stand up straight?

Well, NASA had already anticipated such an outcome. This is why when the flag is carefully examined, there is a pole that stretches vertically along the top of the flag. NASA designed this mechanism to enable the flag to appear as if it was waving in the wind. It’s crucial to remember that this was when many countries fought for dominance in space exploration.

Humans Haven’t Gone to the Moon Since

The other reason people claim the moon landing was stage-managed is that humans have never been able to visit the celestial object after 1969. This is a misconception. After Apollo 11, NASA was able to commission six other trips to the moon, 5 of which were very successful.

However, NASA canceled future Apollo missions in 1970 due to various reasons. First, the US dealt with other external forces, such as the Vietnam War. Therefore, there was a change in priorities. To debunk this theory, in early 2024, a private American company built a machine called Odysseus that landed on the moon after a 73-minute descent. The success of Odysseus made NASA schedule a plan to send human beings to the moon in 2026. This proves that the first moon landing was real, as were these subsequent trips.

The Absence of Stars in the Photos Taken

Another claim alleging the moon landing was fake is the absence of stars in the background of the pictures the Apollo 11 crew took. Conspiracy theorists believe that computers generated these pictures, and that’s why there are no stars in the sky.

There are two explanations behind this. The two astronauts only used film cameras to photograph one another. The cameras were designed to have a smaller aperture and fast shutter speed to generate clear images of objects such as the astronauts and key aspects of the moon. This is why stars are not visible in some photos. However, in other pictures of the moon Neil and Buzz took, there are blobs of light in the background.

There was also the issue regarding the radiation exposure on the Earth’s radiation field, also called the Van Allen. This is another factor that scientists had considered, and to avoid radiation exposure, the vessel used by Neil and Buzz traveled at a fast speed, which imitated “firewalking.”

The spacecraft was so fast that it wasn’t affected by the radiation. It is also important to note that while planning the trajectory of Apollo 11, the scientists at NASA ensured that the spacecraft only passed through the weakest part of the Van Allen belts. Before sending astronauts to the moon, the US and USSR had extensively studied the Earth’s radiation field to determine the nature of the particles and the amount of radiation emitted.

The Shadows on the Pictures of The Astronauts Aren’t Parallel

Finally, the shadows on the pictures of the astronauts on the moon do not appear to be parallel. This also triggered another conspiracy theory that the moon landing was fake. However, according to Professor Anu Ojha, the Director of Championing Space at the UK Space Agency, the effect of shadows not being parallel can be recreated here on Earth, not just on the moon. When the sun is low in the sky, shadows in a picture appear non-parallel. This is the same thing that happened on the moon when Neil Armstrong took a picture of the moon’s surface.
